Cloth Diapers

Before the baby comes - Purchase or accept a hand-me-down starter set (see “Cloth Diaper ‘Splainer” below).

The first two months - If you are planning to (or maybe to) cloth diaper, it’s still advisable to use disposable diapers for the first month or so. This is because (1) meconium is very sticky and kind of tar-like and you’ll be dealing with a lot so just don’t even and (2) if you try to cloth right away you may not end up doing it at all. It’s very overwhelming having a baby for the first time. Just use disposables for the first month or two while you are learning other things like how to take care of a baby. And then you’ll get the hang of it and it’ll be fun to graduate your baby (and yourself!) into cloth diapers.

After the first two months - It’s time to get started! Try starting out by cloth diapering just one day a week. If you like it, it’ll grow naturally from there. You’ll get addicted to not throwing diapers away!

Cloth Diaper ‘Splainer

• What’s the best cloth diaper? There is no “best” cloth diaper. They all absorb pee and hold poop which is what a diaper should do.

• Then how do I pick a cloth diaper??!? There are so many kinds! The different styles have different advantages. These are (1) cost (2) drying time (3) bulkiness and (4) assembly speed. So if you want something that is cheap and dries quickly and assembly speed isn’t important to you, you’ll want flats. If you want cheap and dries quickly and assembly speed is important to you, you’ll want prefolds but note that they don’t dry as quickly as flats and they cost a bit more. If cost is no issue but you want zero assembly time you’ll want all-in-ones…you get the gist.

• What is a “starter set”? This is just any bunch of cloth diapers that you inherit or get for cheap. You’ll use them when you start out the see if the cloth diapering life is for you. Good places to get a cheap starter set are Facebook Marketplace or your local Facebook “buy nothing” group.
  

Car Seat?

What’s the best car seat? There is no best car seat. The point of a car seat is to be a safe place for your baby to sit during car travel (as opposed to lolling around in the back seat) and to protect your baby in the case of an accident. All car seats in the US accomplish this as judged by the _______. So from that vantage point car seats are all the same. However, car seats do have different bonus features. Because you will likely use the car seat a lot, you should get one with as many of the bonuses (that you want) as you can afford. And then whichever one of those you think is the prettiest.
